Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on supporters Saturday to push for stronger U.S. sanctions against Russia after President Donald Trump signed an executive order temporarily suspending a sweeping package of economic restrictions targeting Moscow.
Ukraine is expected to again face increased Russian attacks with winter approaching.
Zelenskyy called the suspension of sanctions unfortunate but stopped short of directly criticizing Trump, as tensions between Kyiv and Washington have grown in recent days.
Trump recently said he thinks Ukraine needs hold elections to select a new president.
Zelenskyy said the Lindsey Graham Act sanctions would help Ukraine in a major way.
“America unfortunately made a decision to completely disregard the Lindsey Graham Act, which was supposed to impose truly effective pressure on Russia to bring this war to an end,” Zelenskyy wrote.
This Act could have helped enormously — and still can! But it needs to actually work, and every voice in support of it matters,” he said.
