Rep. Thomas Massie introduces articles of impeachment against Hegseth

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., took to the House floor Tuesday to introduce articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Massie said Hegseth continues to abuse the power of his office by executing an “unlawful order to impose hostilities” against Iran.

Massie also criticized Hegseth’s military efforts in Venezuela and Yemen, saying they lacked congressional approval.

Massie added that Hegseth “will remain a threat to the Constitution if allowed to remain in office, and has acted in a manner grossly incompatible with the rule of law.”

The House now has two legislative days to take up the impeachment articles against Hegseth. However, it could also vote to table the resolution.

Massie lost a primary in May in a bid for an eighth term in Congress. President Donald Trump supported Massie’s challenger.

Previous impeachment effort

Massie’s move Tuesday comes after several House Democrats filed impeachment articles against Hegseth in April.

Most of those articles also centered on the war in Iran, with lawmakers calling it an “unauthorized war against Iran and reckless endangerment of United States servicemembers.”

They said the operation knowingly placed members of the armed forces at risk, lacked clear objectives and proceeded without congressional approval.

Hegseth and his department faced serious backlash early in the war, after a girls’ elementary school was struck by missiles. As many as 175 people were killed.

A preliminary investigation found that the U.S. military accidentally targeted the school, although a formal inquiry is not yet complete.
